A 29-year-old Scarborough man has died following a four-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Whitby on Tuesday morning.
The victim, whose identity wasn’t disclosed, was pronounced at the scene following the crash at 10:30 a.m. that involved a transport truck, a tour bus and two cars, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said.
Police say the transport truck was travelling westbound, east of Thickson Road, when it struck a Toyota Corolla, killing one of its occupants and injuring the driver and another passenger. The initial crash resulted in a second crash with a Pontiac Sunfire and a tour bus.
The driver of the Pontiac was taken to hospital with minor injuries. All three were taken to hospital by ground ambulance, including one who later had to be airlifted from an Oshawa hospital to Sunnybrook hospital. The transport driver, the tour bus driver and the 38 tour bus passengers weren’t injured.
The westbound lanes of Hwy. 401 were closed from Stephenson to Thickson roads while police investigated until about 4:30 p.m. It’s unclear how the crash occurred.
