Genie Army grabs piece of Montreal spotlight as fan club cheers on Bouchard

A half-dozen Australians in Montreal to cheer on Eugenie Bouchard at the Rogers Cup have attracted a small following of their own.

Ryan Gibb, part of the fan club known as the Genie Army, says he’s been greeted warmly by fellow tennis fans and sometimes even asked to pose for a photo.

Members of the group met with youngsters today at an event on tournament grounds organized by Tennis Canada.

Gibb says he’s amazed at how big the Genie Army phenomenon has become since it started at the Australian Open last January, when Bouchard made a run all the way to the semifinals.

Now members of the fan club are trying to start up a website where it will sell Genie Army T-shirts and Gibb said they are working to trademark the name.

Strong showings at the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this summer have Bouchard, a Montreal native, ranked No. 7 in the world heading into the tournament.
