John Tory uses delay in Leafs vs. Wings game to criticize rivals on gridlock

It’s rare that preseason NHL hockey skates its way into a municipal election, but in less than 140 characters Toronto mayoral candidate John Tory managed to make it happen on Friday night.

Tory used a slight delay in a preseason NHL game between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs to criticize his opponents and tout his own SmartTrack transit proposal in a tweet from his official account.

The strange story began unfolding when the Red Wings’ flight was delayed. Then the team was held up at immigration. Finally, the team bus became snarled in traffic on its way to the Air Canada Centre from Pearson Airport, forcing a game delay of about 20 minutes.
