Sheppard & McCowan intersection partially reopens after gas leak

The intersection of McCowan Road and Sheppard Avenue East has partially reopened Thursday morning following Wednesday’s natural gas leak.

Enbridge crews capped the leak just before 7 a.m. Thursday after working on it for almost 24 hours.

Sheppard and the southbound lanes of McCowan reopened soon after. The northbound lanes remain closed.

A large, old pipe valve burst, so crews had to weld together a custom-made cap which they then put in place.

The pipe is located under the road and, when the pipe burst, people waiting at a bus stop nearby could hear and smell the escaping gas.
