The City of Toronto is hoping the public can help them find whoever is responsible for the severe abuse of a young, male, black Labrador mix dog so badly injured that it had to be put down.
Toronto Animal Services picked up the dog on Oct. 10 after it was found near a home in the area of Jane Street and Finch Avenue West with an elastic band tied around its muzzle that caused severe swelling and an injured ear.
Dr. Stephanie Sparling treated the dog and said it was the most severe suspected animal abuse she had ever dealt with.
Further tests and treatments at a clinic confirmed the dog had multiple broken ribs and burns — possibly chemical in nature — to 30 per cent of its body, including its head, ears and feet.
The dog was given antibiotics and pain medication but after a consultation with an internal medicine specialist, it was determined that the dog was unable to recover from its severe injuries and was euthanized on Thursday.
The case has been reported to police and the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact CrimeStoppers through Tattletails, a program developed to encourage the reporting of animal abuse and neglect, at 1-800-222-8477.
