York homicide investigating woman’s death at Markham home

York Regional Police’s homicide unit is investigating the death of a 28-year-old woman found on a Markham driveway on Friday morning.

She was found in critical condition lying outside a home on Norbury Drive, in the 14th Avenue and Markham Road area, around 6:15 a.m.

She was transported to hospital where she later died.

“There were some obvious signs of trauma,” Const. Laura Nicolle of York Regional police said. “We are waiting on the Coroner’s investigation to determine the cause of death.”

Homicide detectives have taken over the case.

Police won’t release the deceased person’s name until next of kin has been notified.

At this point, police will not confirm whether the woman lived at the home where she was found but residents in the area believe the house was being used as a rental.

“There’s always different people living in that particular house,” said Merriel, a resident of the neighbourhood.

CityNews found multiple postings online, advertising single-occupancy rooms for rent at the address – one as recent as mid-October.

“I believe the owner lives there but also rented part of the house out,” Nino Montanaro, another neighbourhood resident, said.

Officials from the city of Markham have confirmed to CityNews that the property is known to them and has been the subject of complaints and investigations.

Officers are canvassing the neighbourhood looking for witnesses who may be able to help piece together what happened.

Police are also asking anyone in the neighbourhood who may have home surveillance video to come forward with the footage.
