TIMELINE: Executive expense claims not only Pan Am scandal

The TO2015 Pan Am committee made a rather large delivery to Queen’s Park on Friday — 5,000 pages that detailed five years worth of executives’ expense claims of dress shirts, wine and parking tickets before they were recently reimbursed.
The disclosure — which was a response to an Freedom of Information (FOI) request by the Globe and Mail for all executives’ expenses since the committee’s inception — was made one day after the Ontario legislature recessed for two months.
The inappropriate expense claims for coffee, bottled water and snacks as well as cash advances on government credit cards isn’t the only issue plaguing the committee tasked with organizing the $2.5 billion games, which will be held in communities across southern Ontario next July and August.
Below outlines some other Pan Am Games issues in recent weeks:
- Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk released a special report on Nov. 26 about the handling of the security contract to private company Contemporary Security Canada (CSC). In her report, she says the cost of security for the Pan Am Games has more than doubled to $247 million and is expected to rise.
- The Ministry of Transportation announces on Nov. 24 its $61-million plan for shuttling athletes and spectators to events, but with all the major GTHA routes already experiencing gridlock on a daily basis, commuters are concerned with how much worse their drive will get.
- In September, the Wynne government announces it’ll cover an additional $74 million for unforeseen Pan Am Games costs.
