Actor Dick Van Patten dead at 86: reports

‘Eight is Enough’ TV dad Dick Van Patten has died, according to media reports.
Variety reports Patten died at Saint John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif. Tuesday morning due to complications from diabetes.
During his lengthy career, Van Patten made a name for himself both on television and in movies.
He became a household name as Tom Bradford on the family comedy series ‘Eight Is Enough’ which ran from 1977 to 1981. During that time he also made several appearances on ‘The Love Boat.”
On the big screen Van Patten appeared in the Disney classic ‘Freaky Friday’ as well as Mel Brooks comedies ‘Space Balls’, High Anxiety” and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.”
Most recently he appeared in ‘Hot in Cleveland’ and ‘Arrested Development.’
