Pan Am Games could be Toronto’s audition for Summer Olympics

It’s something Mayor John Tory has mused about, but a possible Toronto Olympic bid is getting some very high-profile support.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach told the CBC Toronto could be a good candidate possibly for the 2024 Olympic Summer Games, but he’ll have to see how it deals with the upcoming Pan Am Games.

“For 2024, I think Toronto could be a good candidate but we have still have to see the Pan Am Games, how it [works],” Bach told the CBC.

“A successful organization of such a big multi-sport event like the Pan Am Games can give a boost to a candidate.”

Bach said he had the chance to speak to Tory recently, who he said is “considering” such a bid. However, it’s yet to be seen if Torontonians and the rest of the GTA will support it

“I bet that if there would be a referendum on this, the answer would be a resounding NO,” one person commented on Facebook.

The city has already revealed that the cost just for the bid alone could be around $60 million. The cost for the Pan Am Games is pegged at $2.5-billlion.

The deadline to apply for the summer 2024 bid is Sept. 15, with Budapest, Boston, Paris, Rome and Hamburg vying for hosting rights.
