Alleged Moka Café shooter appears in court on murder charges

Jason Hay was in court Saturday facing two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder in connection with the fatal shootings at a Vaughan café in June

The 27-year-old Mississauga man remained in a cell at the Newmarket courthouse and appeared before the judge via video. He was remanded to custody until his Aug. 24 bail hearing.

Investigators believe Hay is the lone gunman who opened fire at the Moka Café on June 24, killing Maria Voci, 47, and Christopher Desimone, 24.

Two other patrons of the establishment, located near Highway 7 and Islington Avenue, were injured in the shooting. Police have not released their names.

Hay was arrested Friday afternoon in what police are calling a high-risk takedown on Highway 400 between Essa Road and Mapleview Drive just south of Barrie. Police said Hay had a firearm when officers pulled the car over.

Tashari Bennett, 25, of Mississauga, was also arrested at the scene and charged for accessory after the fact and breach of recognizance.

A Canada-wide warrant had been issued for Hay’s arrest on Aug. 7.
