Eaton Centre to get new pedestrian bridge for Saks arrival

Saks Fifth Avenue is coming to Toronto, and with it comes a facelift for the future home of its Canadian flagship location.

The Hudson’s Bay building on Queen Street West will be updated inside and out to accommodate the upscale American retailer. The most visible change might be the new “pedway” bridge over Queen, connecting the Bay building with the rest of the Eaton Centre.

Renderings of the design, released by Hudson’s Bay Co., show the new bridge will be encased in glass with multiple spiralling angles – a futuristic take on the no-nonsense current bridge that’s been in place for over three decades.

Saks Fifth Avenue will open on Queen Street West in 2016, and occupy parts of four floors in the Hudson Bay building’s east side. The Bay will still occupy the majority of the building.

Construction has already begun on interior renovations. Eventually the building will include a basement food court run by Pusateri’s Fine Foods, a valet entrance for Saks, and a ground-level restaurant.

Hudson’s Bay Co. bought the American department store chain in 2013.

In January 2014, Hudson’s Bay Co. sold the Queen and Bay building to Cadillac Fairview, owners of the Eaton Centre. Hudson’s Bay Co. now leases space in the building.

Another Saks outlet will open in Sherway Gardens mall in Etobicoke. In 2016.
