If you hop on a GO train barefoot with music blaring out of your ear buds and then proceed to place your bags on a seat while tossing your newspaper on the floor, you could owe Metrolinx a total of $375 in fines.
What’s that? You can’t find your ticket? Make that $575.
New rules and increased fines are in effect for Metrolinx passengers who engage in a slew of offences and etiquette breaches.
They range from the obvious and obnoxious, like no smoking ($150) or urinating/defecating on the platform ($125) to the vague and innocuous, like interfere with ordinary enjoyment of transit system ($125) or place object on vehicle seat ($75).
You’re more likely to win a Darwin Award for trying to ride the train while hanging from the outside, but that’s covered as well with a $125 fine.
It’s the first time Metrolinx has updated its list of fines since 2002.
The Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) fines are even more staggering, ranging from $235 to $425.
Many of the offenses seem like common occurrences.
For instance, holding or forcing a TTC vehicle door open could earn you a $235 fine.
You can also get dinged $235 for swearing or putting your foot on a seat.
