Two-alarm fire at Esplanade and Yonge parking garage

By News staff

A two-alarm fire that broke out on the roof of a building under construction on The Esplanade near Yonge Street is now out.

Fire crews were called to the three-storey parking garage around 11:50 a.m. on Wednesday after construction materials caught fire.

Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control in about 20 minutes.

No injuries have been reported.

At the height of the fire, traffic on the Gardiner Expressway slowed to a crawl as drivers took a look at the heavy smoke pouring out.

The area has reopened to traffic.

The fire also caused delays for GO trains leaving Union Station, but Metrolinx said regular service has since resumed.
