Falling temps, freezing rain make for treacherous morning commute

By News Staff

Be prepared for a treacherous morning commute across the GTA as the rain and wet snow from Wednesday night transitions to freezing rain Thursday morning.

Environment Canada says between 5 and 10 millimetres of ice accumulation are possible before the freezing rain changes to rain by Thursday afternoon. That will make surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots slippery and hazardous.

The ice build-up could cause tree branches to break and power outages may occur.

We could see between 2-5 centimetres of snow across the GTA and there is a chance that the extreme northern portions could see as much as 15 centimetres of snow.

Air Canada has issued travel alerts for flights into and out of Billy Bishop and Pearson International Airport. Check the flight status before heading out as the freezing rain and snow could force delays or cancellations.

By midday Thursday, the freezing rain will continue over higher elevations but transition to light showers for most of the GTA as the temperatures rise above zero. There is also the risk of thunderstorms.

Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
