This article is more than 5 years old.
The mother of a man who was brazenly shot numerous times at point-blank range on Wednesday morning says she had just finished speaking to her son on the phone when she heard a volley of gunshots ring out.
Tracey Leigh ran out of her Jamestown apartment and fainted when her worst nightmare was realized – it was her son, Nathan Leigh, who was felled by bullets in an early-morning shooting that was captured on surveillance video.
The 20-year-old remains in hospital in critical condition.
“I just spoke to him moments before it happened and he said he was outside,” Leigh told CityNews on Thursday. “Then I heard shots and I ran outside and he was on the ground.
“I fainted when I seen him. I don’t understand why they did this to him.”
Leigh said her son is currently in a medically-induced coma after several bullets pierced his lungs. He was also shot in the face.
She says Nathan is a “homebody” who enjoys staying inside and playing video games. “He has no problems with nobody,” she insisted.
Police say it’s obvious that’s not the case.
“The video speaks for itself,” police Chief Mark Saunders said on Thursday. “It looks like it was very targeted.”
The shooting happened at around 9:15 a.m. in a parking lot at 15 Pittsboro Drive, in the Finch Avenue West and Martin Grove Road area.
On Thursday, police released the video to the public.
It shows two men approaching Nathan. One of them, in a blue shirt, pulls out a gun and begins firing several shots at him as he falls to the ground gravely wounded.
A second suspect in a white shirt trails behind. Police say the second suspect was also armed with a handgun and fired at the victim, but the video police released didn’t capture him shooting.
Supt. Ron Taverner said a second video that hasn’t been released to the public clearly shows the second suspect wielding a handgun.
The suspect in the blue shirt has been identified by police as Shamaury White, 21, of Toronto.
He’s currently being sought on a slew of serious charges including attempted murder and discharging a firearm with intent to wound and endanger life.
Police haven’t identified the second man yet (photo below).
He’s described as a black male with a large afro, 5-foot-10 to 6-foot-1, with a thin build.
Both suspects were last seen running towards a vehicle parked in the area, described as a blue, late-model Nissan Versa.
Chief Saunders warned that both men are to be considered armed and dangerous, and he added that White is known to police, but wouldn’t elaborate.
The daylight shooting is just one of 23 so far this year in 23 Division. A fatal shooting two weeks ago claimed the life of Candice Rochelle Bobb who was five months pregnant. Her baby was delivered prematurely by emergency C-section.
This division has the highest number of shooting incidents in the city.
The fear in the community is palpable.
Leigh agreed to speak with CityNews on the condition that her face wasn’t shown on TV.
“I don’t want them to come after the rest of my family,” she stated ominously.
