Toronto councillor opening provincial campaign office

By News Staff and The Canadian Press

Toronto city councillor Raymond Cho is officially opening his provincial campaign office on Monday.

Cho is the Ontario Progressive Conservative candidate for the upcoming Scarborough-Rouge River byelection.

Ontario PC leader Patrick Brown and former Toronto councillor Doug Ford will also be attending Cho’s office opening.

The Scarborough-Rouge River seat has been vacant since Liberal backbencher Bas Balkissoon abruptly resigned in March.

Cho has campaigned to represent Scarborough-Rouge River before: he ran and lost in the 2012 provincial election, and he lost a federal bid in 2004. Cho has represented Scarborough-Rouge River since 2003, and was first elected to Metro Council in 1991. He does not have to give up his council seat to run.

Piragal Thiru will run under the Liberal banner in the riding, and Neethan Shan will represent the NDP.

Shan, now a school board trustee, has also campaigned provincially before. He ran and lost in Scarborough-Guildwood in 2007, and he lost to Balksissoon in Scarborough-Rouge River in 2011.

The Green Party has nominated Priyan De Silva and Wayne Simmons will represent the Freedom Party.

Premier Kathleen Wynne has not yet set a date for the byelection.
