Woman arrested in alleged Oshawa engagement ring theft

Durham police have charged a Whitby woman after an engagement ring was allegedly stolen from a restaurant, but they haven’t been able to find the ring.
Officers believe the ring, worth more than $3,000, was left behind at Whiskey John’s in Oshawa around 7 p.m. on Oct. 4.
The ring’s owner returned to the restaurant minutes after realizing she left it at the table. According to police, a man and woman sitting at the same table helped look for it and claimed they couldn’t find it.
However, video from the restaurant shows the woman picking up the ring, showing it to the man and quickly hiding it from its owner.
Police released security camera images of a suspect, and a woman was arrested on Tuesday.
Heather Hubert-Smith, 46, is charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000.
