With the recent wave of warm weather in Toronto, you may have put away your parka – you will need to bring it back out.
The city is under an extreme cold weather alert, which was issued by Toronto’s acting medical officer of health on Friday.
680 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor said temperatures will fall throughout the day with windchill values near -21 by nightfall.
A high of -1 C was already reached earlier in the morning. The temperature is expected to be near -4 C for the rest of the day but the wind will make it feel close to -13 C.
The frigid temperatures are expected to continue into Saturday with windchill values near -23 in the evening and overnight.
Toronto Public Health issues an extreme cold weather alert when the temperature is forecast to reach -15 C or colder, or when the wind chill is forecast to reach -20 or colder.
During an alert, you’re encouraged to dress in layers and cover up exposed skin, which can freeze in minutes. Also, you’re asked to call or visit friends, neighbours and family who may experience difficulties in these dangerous weather situations.
The alert also triggers extra services for the homeless, including extra shelter beds and overnight street outreach.
Two cold weather drop-in centres are also open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They are located at 323 Dundas St. E. and 25 Augusta Ave.
