2 dead after multi-vehicle crash in Georgina

Two people are dead and three injured after a five-vehicle crash on Highway 48 in Georgina on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the crash happened around 12 p.m. near Old Homestead Road and involved three transport trucks, a cube van and an SUV.

“The collision damage of these involved vehicles is absolutely devastating,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt. “The commercial vehicles and passenger vehicle are absolutely crushed beyond recognition.”

One of the two who died was in the cube van; the other was in the car. The coroner attended the scene.

A boy, who was in the SUV, was airlifted to SickKids Hospital and is in stable condition. An adult from the cube van was extricated and also airlifted to hospital in critical condition. A third person was taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

Schmidt said it appears at least one of the vehicles had stopped in the northbound lanes and an approaching vehicle couldn’t stop in time and triggered a chain-reaction collision.

There was construction up ahead, but it’s not clear if that was what caused traffic to slow.
