Five people, including two young children, were seriously injured following a high speed multi-vehicle crash just outside of Hamilton.

Hamilton police were called to the scene of a head-on crash on Nebo Road and Dickenson Road East on Hamilton Mountain around 4 p.m. Saturday.

Police say a Ford vehicle travelling northbound, driven by a 17-year-old male with an 18-year-old passenger, tried to pass another vehicle by entering into the oncoming lane. The Ford struck a southbound Honda driven by a 29-year-old woman with her two young children on board. The children are two years old and three weeks old.

Hamilton paramedics say three pediatric patients were taken to a regional trauma centre, two in critical condition and one in serious condition.

One adult was transported to a trauma centre while another adult was taken to a local hospital.

Police say the 17-year-old driver of the Ford was arrested and is facing four counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. His name will not be released as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The collision reconstruction unit has taken over the investigation.
