Wild temperature swings expected over next few days

By Adam Stiles

Welcome to fall and all of the ups and downs that come with season. While average high temperatures are near 15 – 17 degrees in Toronto, there is really nothing average about how we get to this number. Autumn is the classic season of wildly swinging temperatures from day to day and even hour to hour. We are facing that exact set up Thursday as mild temperatures are expected to start the day with a much cooler finish. From temps into the 20’s at sunrise to the lower double digits by sunset.

“Fall is all about the fight between warm air to the south and colder air to the north! Much of the time that battle ground is southern Ontario and areas sharing the same latitude. It is not surprising to see sweaters and scarves ones day and shorts and sandals the next,” said meteorologist Adam Stiles. “The records for this week are in the upper 20’s and lower 30’s, so you can easily still get that summer feeling, and we all know it can go the other way too.”

Along with the temperature swings, the potential for severe thunderstorms and wind events increase during this transition season.

“Buckle up over the next week or so, we have some pretty wild temperature swings and a few rounds of storms coming our way,” adds Stiles. “Friday looks chilly, while the weekend will be mild and unsettled. We are watching the potential for a larger and more intense push of warm and humid air on Tuesday next week. In fact we might even be within a few degrees of the record high temperature for that date.”
