City of Toronto embarks on snow-removal blitz

By News Staff

City of Toronto road crews are on a mission to tackle the snowbanks left over from this week’s record snowfall.

Over the next five to seven days, crews will be working 12-hour shifts with snow blowers, loaders and dump trucks to remove snow from main roads and side streets at various neighbourhoods across the city.

Staff will be prioritizing streets to ensure safety, including for emergency vehicles.

Crews will begin on Friday by focusing their efforts in East York, with its narrow side streets.

Drivers should take note because the city says it may be necessary to engage in “friendly tows” starting early Saturday morning to help make room for equipment. Cars will be towed to nearby locations. The city will be putting up signs ahead of time in those areas so drivers will know they need to move their cars.

Crews will then take the snow to the city’s storage facilities.

A recent poll showed that half of Torontonians were unsatisfied with snow removal from sidewalks this season. One-third of those asked said snow-removal services have been worse this year than previous years

A record 18 centimetres of snow fell on the city on Wednesday, beating an old record of 12.4 centimetres.
