Summer snow temporarily shuts popular Rocky Mountain roadway

HELENA, Mont. — A snowstorm has temporarily shut down a popular mountain roadway leading to Yellowstone National Park on the first day of summer.

Montana transportation officials say the Beartooth Pass has been closed at the Montana-Wyoming state line since Thursday night because of blowing and drifting snow and high wind.

The Beartooth Highway reaches nearly 11,000 feet (3,350 metres) in elevation as it runs from the town of Red Lodge to Yellowstone’s northeast entrance. The park is entering its peak tourist season, and the winding highway is a favourite route of visitors.

Snow also fell overnight in Montana’s Glacier National Park and near Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the mountains in northern Colorado starting Friday night, with up to 10 inches forecast to fall above 10,000 feet (3,000 metres).
