Petty crime that snowballed into a homicide.
That’s how Peel regional police are describing a double stabbing that left one man dead early Friday morning in a quiet Brampton neighbourhood.
In an update Friday afternoon, Acting Superintendent Martin Ottaway said up to five males were committing minor property offences, including thefts from vehicles, on Lanebrook Drive near Castlemore Road and Goreway Drive.
At around 2 a.m. two men, a father and his son who live in the area confronted the suspects.
Police say one of the suspects stabbed both men.
Glensbert Oliver, 63, died at the scene, police said Friday afternoon.
His son, aged 40, remains in hospital with injuries from stab wounds. He’s expected to survive.

Ottaway said all of the suspects are black males in their late teens or early twenties. They fled in a dark coloured SUV.
“This was people just trying to stop a minor property offence that escalated to the point of becoming a homicide. Very tragic.” Ottaway said.
Police are urging the suspects to contact lawyers and turn themselves in.
“I don’t think they set out … to become involved in a homicide,” he said. “I believe they were out committing minor property offences and I think the actions of one has escalated this to a homicide investigation.”
Ottaway bemoaned the “senseless” death and urged citizens to call the police if they notice a crime being committed.
“I would encourage people in any crime to contact the police, call 911 if you see a crime in progress,” he said.
“I would not suggest that people confront anyone involved in any type of offence like what happened last night. Property can be replaced, lives obviously cannot.”
