Trudeau won’t take part in Citytv, Maclean’s Leaders’ debate: Liberal party

Justin Trudeau won’t take part in the first National Leaders Debate of the 2019 election calendar hosted by Citytv and Maclean’s on Thursday, September 12.
In a statement to CityNews, Liberal party Director of Communications and Policy, Daniel Lauzon, said Trudeau would only participate in debates organized by the Leaders’ Debates Commission.
“Prime Minister Trudeau will take part in both debates organized by the Leaders’ Debates Commission,” Lauzon wrote.
“The Commission was established after the last election where the governing party tried to game the system and make sure the fewest number of Canadians engaged in the debates. We think that’s wrong. The Commission debates will be widely distributed on television, radio, digital and social streaming platforms and reach the largest possible audience.”
The two-hour Citytv and Maclean’s debate in English will centre on four major themes: the economy, foreign policy, Indigenous issues and energy and the environment.
The event will take place in Toronto while airing live on Citytv, Macleans.ca and Facebook, as well as on Rogers news talk radio stations (NEWS 95.7, 1310 NEWS and 570 NEWS).
Online, it will be live-streamed on CityNews.ca in all regions and 680News.com and other Rogers news radio websites (660citynews.com and citynews1130.com).
CPAC will carry the debate with a French translation, while OMNI Television will air it with interpretation into Mandarin and Cantonese (in broadcast) and Punjabi (online).
Citytv and Maclean’s will have post-debate coverage, including analysis and viewer reaction.
