The southbound lanes of Highway 410 have reopened at Derry Road following a pedestrian fatality early Friday morning.
Police said a 27-year-old man was killed on the highway. His death is not considered to be accidental.
The OPP said the highway was originally closed just before 4:30 a.m. for a single-vehicle fire.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating and has invoked their mandate.
SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said around 4:30 a.m., police received a 911 call from a passerby who saw a man on the Derry overpass “acting in a suspicious manner.”
When police arrived at the scene, “two police officers exited their police cruisers [and] the man fell from the overpass to the highway below.”
The man fell on a van travelling in the southbound lanes and was pronounced dead on scene.
The driver of the van was able to exit the vehicle before it caught on fire. He was taken to hospital for an assessment but was not seriously injured.
Police have identified the man who died but have not released his name as they are in the process of notifying his next of kin.
