The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a fatal shooting on Highway 410 in Brampton.

Peel regional police were called to Highway 410 and Sandalwood Parkway East just before 2:30 a.m. for reports of shots being fired.

“When we arrived, we did locate two people with a vehicle in the northbound lanes of Highway 410 near Sandalwood,” Const. Heather Cannon said.

Paramedics said one person, a man believed to be in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second person, another male believed to be in his 20s, was rushed to hospital in critical condition. His condition is now considered to be not life-threatening.

A short time later, police had an interaction with another vehicle on the 410 and due to that incident the SIU was called in.

The SIU said when police arrived on the scene the Audi SUV was stopped next to a pickup truck and when they approached and attempted to block the vehicle, the SUV reversed. At that point, an officer fired multiple shots at the vehicle which then fled the scene northbound on highway 410.

The SUV was later located in a residential area on Checkerberry Crescent, near Sandalwood and Great Lakes Drive, with several bullet holes in it.

The SIU says the occupants of the Audi have not yet been located and there is no information at this time if anyone in the car was injured.

Suspect descriptions have not been released.

Both the SIU and Peel Regional Police said there were “multiple crime scenes” being investigated. The SIU said it is investigating what happened between police and the Audi while Peel Regional Police are investigating anything that happened prior to that interaction.

Reports from the scene indicate a vehicle was carjacked by two suspects after the shooting. A second vehicle is reportedly in a ditch off the 410. Police have not confirmed either of these two reports.

Highway 410 was closed in both directions between Bovaird Drive and Mayfield Road for several hours, but has since reopened.
