Publisher corrects subtitle of Desmond Cole’s book to include the word ‘black’

By The Canadian Press

Doubleday Canada says it’s printing new book jackets for Desmond Cole’s “The Skin We’re In” after the word “black” was omitted from the subtitle.

The publisher tweeted last Friday that it’s replacing jackets of the activist and journalist’s debut book to include the correct subtitle: “A Year of Black Resistance and Power.”

It said during the process of preparing the jacket for the printer, “we made an error,” and the subtitle was “regrettably” printed as “A Year of Resistance and Power.”

Doubleday Canada said it printed new jackets as soon as it identified the problem, and that it’s working with booksellers to get them on the shelves.

The publisher said it’s making “immediate changes to our internal processes” to prevent such errors going forward.

Cole tweeted that he was “dismayed” by the mistake, but pleased the publisher is “taking full responsibility,” adding that “our blackness needs to be visible.”

“We are immensely proud to publish Desmond Cole and his incredibly important book, ‘The Skin We’re In,’ and are committed to bringing it to the widest possible readership,” Doubleday Canada tweeted.
