Ontario schools to remain closed until May 4

It will be at least May when students and teachers of Ontario’s schools head back into the classroom, Premier Doug Ford announced on Tuesday.

During a press conference, Ford said they had hoped to have classes resume on Monday — two weeks after March Break – but with the province continuing to battle COVID-19, it’s not possible.

“As I’ve told you before, the situation continues to change day by day, hour by hour,” Ford said.

At the advice of medical officials, Ford said it will be at least May 1 for teachers to return to class and May 4 for students.

However, that is largely dependent upon how if COVID-19 continues to spread across the province.

Private schools and childcare will also be closed for another two weeks as the provincial state of emergency continues.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce said they will continue to support the education of Ontario’s children, announcing increased e-learning.

The province will be working with school boards to find ways to help students in these tough times.

“It will require all of us to work together for the good of our students,” Lecce said.

He said it’s their instinct to work to salvage the remainder of the school year — even if it means implementing nontraditional methods.

Lecce said the province will also help by distributing laptops as needed and getting the proper technology to students who need it. Students with special needs will also be supported with additional guidance.
