Canada and U.S. reach agreement to extend border closure by 30 days: senior government source

By Cormac Mac Sweeney

An agreement has been reached between the United States and Canada to extend the border closure for non-essential travel by another 30 days, a senior government source says.

The agreement still needs some final approvals before becoming official.

This update on Friday came not long after U.S. President Donald Trump began musing about possibly reopening the border sooner rather than later — which prompted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to say the border is still weeks away from reopening.

The original deal, which is set to expire on April, was put in place to stop all recreational travel such as tourism, and visiting friends and family.

The border is still open to essential travel such as the transportation of goods in order to keep the economy and supply chain as healthy as they can be during the coronavirus pandemic.
