A total of 47 residents have died following a COVID-19 outbreak at the Orchard Villa long-term care home in Pickering.
The home has been one of the hardest hit in the province, reporting a total of 245 cases among residents, 145 of those are in isolation while another 11 have been hospitalized. Another 42 cases have been resolved.
At Orchard Villa’s Retirement Residence, two residents have died and 37 cases have been reported.
The COVID-19 cases reported at Orchard Villa make up the vast majority of those reported in the Pickering area — 282 of 347.
Orchard Villa is one of five GTA long-term care residences where military assistance was requested. Personnel were expected to arrive on Monday.
Premier Doug Ford had formally requested military assistance last week for operational and logistical assistance, so long-term care staff can focus on the care of residents.
According to the Ministry of Long-Term Care, over 150 long-term care homes have declared outbreaks and over 600 residents have died.
Numbers released by the ministry on Monday showed residents of long-term care homes make up 75 per cent of total COVID-19 deaths in Ontario.
