Homicide is investigating after a man was shot while waiting for a ride to work outside an apartment building in Scarborough on Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Danforth Road near Eglinton Avenue East around 3:30 a.m.

Police said the 45-year-old man, who police have identified as John Wheeler of Toronto, was standing outside the building when two suspects approached him.

Police said one of the suspects then opened fire, and the victim was shot in the back.

The suspects then fled the scene in a dark-coloured SUV that police said was driven by a woman.

Paramedics said the victim was rushed to a trauma centre with critical gunshot wounds. He later died of his injuries.

Investigators said the victim was not known to police.

“He [was] a hard working man. He lives in the neighbourhood,” Det-Sgt. Ted Lioumanis explained.

“Right now, in regards to motive, there is no motive that I can suggest why he was targeted, if he was even targeted.”
