Durham police release suspect photo in Whitby assault

By News staff

Durham police have released a photo of the suspect accused of brutally attacking a Whitby woman last month.

Police said they released the photo to “ensure there are no other [alleged] victims.”

Anthony Doiron-Francis, 21, of Whitby, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault and aggravated assault.

The 50-year-old woman had been reported missing in the evening of July 28, after going for a walk in the area.

Officers found the woman near a creek in the area of Taunton Road East and Anderson Street just before 10 a.m. on July 29.

Police said she had suffered multiple injuries that were consistent with an assault and was rushed to hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Investigators said the suspect wasn’t known to the victim and believe this was a random attack.

Doiron-Francis lived in Ottawa until March and then moved to Whitby. Police believe he also spent time in Burlington. He is five foot 10 inches tall, weighs 220 pounds and has a short hair and a goatee.

He remains in custody.
