Inmate at Toronto East Detention Centre tests positive for COVID-19

An inmate at the Toronto East Detention Centre has tested positive for COVID-19, the Ministry of the Solicitor General confirms.

In an email to CityNews, the Ministry said the inmate tested positive on Aug. 30.

The Ministry said it is working with Toronto Public Health “to mitigate any impacts to staff and inmates.”

“In accordance with public health advice, any staff and inmate close contacts are self-isolating and/or being tested as appropriate,” ministry spokesperson Brent Ross said.

Outbreaks at correctional institutes have been an ongoing concern since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

In April, 60 inmates and eight staff tested positive at the Ontario Correctional Institute in Brampton.

In March, a correctional officer at Toronto South Detention Centre in Etobicoke tested positive for COVID-19 and was treated at hospital.
