A man in his 50s is dead after he was shot while in a vehicle in North York.

Toronto police were called to Stilecroft Drive near Sheppard Avenue West and Keele Street at 5 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police said the man was sitting in a van when another vehicle approached and opened fire.

“Although we’re at the infancy stage of this investigation, we believe it was a dark coloured vehicle that was involved in this incident,” Insp. Mandeep Mann explained.

“It was last seen fleeing eastbound on Stilecroft Drive towards Keele Street.”

The victim suffered an upper body gunshot wound and was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died.

He has been identified by police as Joseph Hart.

Police believe the Hart was targeted and that there is no further threat to anyone in the neighbourhood.

“We do believe, based on the information we have right now, that this was a targeted shooting,” Mann said.

No details on the suspect have been released and there has been no word on a possible motive for the shooting.

This is Toronto’s 47th murder of the year.
