Toronto police have identified a man who was shot to death Thursday in front of his newborn and wife.
Police say Hamid Zakarie, 27, was standing outside of his vehicle after putting the baby in the rear seat when suspects drove past and fired several gunshots at him.
It happened around 9:15 a.m. on Patika Avenue near Lawrence Avenue West and Jane Street in North York.
Zakarie died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
In a release Thursday, police said the shooting appears targeted.
“Investigators have been canvassing the neighbourhood and have gathered video surveillance from local residents and businesses,” police said. “It is believed that the suspects had been in the area some time prior waiting for Hamid Zakarie to exit his house.”
A GoFundMe account says Hamdi and his wife were on their way to the hospital for a check up with their newborn when the shooting took place.
One of the donators on the page said Zakarie was his best friend growing up, and called him a “loving, caring, extremely smart and funny kid.”
His killers remain at large.
