The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a serious three-vehicle crash near Downsview Park Friday afternoon.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Keele Street and Sheppard Avenue West at around noon, police said.

Police said an officer allegedly tried to stop a Mercedes Benz for speeding, but the driver fled.

The SIU says the Mercedes Benz then became involved with a Honda that was traveling west on Sheppard Avenue and a Hyundai that had been making a left turn from northbound Keele Street onto Sheppard Avenue West.

One of the vehicles involved flipped over and caught fire, police said.

Six people were taken to the hospital, including one 23-year-old man in life-threatening condition. He was in the Mercedes Benz at the time of the collision.

A woman from the Honda also suffered serious injuries.

Photos and video from the scene showed a large debris field, including a burned-out car and damaged hydro polls.

The SIU is called in where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault involving police and members of the public.
