Two women in their early 20s are dead after a multi-vehicle crash on the Toronto-bound QEW in Burlington.

Provincial police were called to the scene near Brant Street just before 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

The crash happened in the Toronto-bound lanes and some vehicles ended up in the centre ditch between the eastbound and westbound lanes.

Police said the two women were pronounced dead at the scene. OPP Const. Kevin Westhead said it appears they were travelling in the same vehicle. One woman was from the Owen Sound area, and the other was from the from Cambridge area.

Westhead said the cause of the crash is being investigated but it appears a vehicle crossed over to the eastbound lanes from the westbound lanes.

He said four vehicles were involved in the crash.

Three other people were taken to hospital but their injuries are not life-threatening.

The westbound QEW reopened at Guelph Line just before 3 p.m. and the eastbound lanes remain closed from the 403 to Guelph Line.
