Upper Canada College is temporarily closing due to multiple positive COVID-19 cases.
Toronto Public Health (TPH) confirmed there have been 12 people related to the Midtown Toronto school who have tested positive for the virus since Feb. 25.
TPH says the majority of cases are a result of community transmission and they have recommended whole school testing.
“The majority of people who tested positive have had close contact with someone in a community or household setting,” says TPH spokesperson Dr. Vinita Dubey.
“An outbreak in a school setting is defined as 2 or more cases where one person could have reasonably acquired COVID-19 in the school setting. Since the people who have tested positive have links in the community for where they likely acquired COVID-19, an outbreak has not been declared in this school.”
The positive cases reportedly include students in grades four, eight, nine, and 12.
The school has decided to voluntarily close for in-person instruction until test results from school-wide testing is completed.

A voluntary testing program is expected to launch at the school next week though it is currently unknown when the school intends to re-open for in-person learning.
In the meantime, all students at the school will transition back to virtual learning.
