Golf courses to reopen ‘in the fullness of time’: province

By Richard Southern

Will golfers be back on the links this long weekend?

When asked that question Wednesday, Ontario Solicitor General Sylvia Jones would only say “in the fullness of time.”

She appeared to indicate that outdoor activities will remain closed this weekend, owing to a concern about a possible uptick in infections.

“We have seen, and we now have the data to show that generally when we have a long weekend there is a spike of an increase of cases, we don’t want to see that,” she said.

The coy answer left Liberal House Leader John Fraser wishing for more clarity.

“It’s a yes or no answer. We play these games like cat and mouse and hide and seek about what we’re going to do next, it’s like it’s business as usual.”

Jones said she wishes everyone’s focus this weekend would be on getting a vaccine.

Ontario’s Science Advisory Table has repeatedly called for allowing residents to gather outdoors, safely, saying activities like golf, tennis and beach volleyball are low risk.

Dr. Peter Juni said recently that in some cases if physical distancing cannot be maintained during the activity, people should wear masks.
