McDonald’s to insert pamphlets in takeout bags to promote vaccinations in Ontario

McDonald’s is doing its part to ensure Ontarians get vaccinated as soon as possible, one takeout Big Mac at a time.

The fast-food giant will be putting English and French pamphlets in its take-out bags to promote vaccines on behalf of the Ontario government.

“Millions of people across Ontario have received their COVID-19 vaccine. Do your part. Get your shot,” the pamphlet says.

“COVID-19 vaccines are proven to be safe and effective by Health Canada. They have been rigorously tested by independent scientists. The vaccines help your immune system fight off the virus if you are exposed. This reduces your risk and can make your symptoms milder if you do get COVID-19.”

Sources tell 680 NEWS there is no financial arrangement between the province and McDonald’s and that the fast-food chain is doing this for free.

The Ford government has insisted it will not offer rewards or any sort of compensation to incentivize those who have yet to be vaccinated or are partially vaccinated, to get fully protected.

That hasn’t stopped Harvey’s, another fast-food chain, from offering up free burgers at Guildwood GO Station; a clinic that will offer second doses of the Moderna vaccine to any adults eligible for a second shot.

Health Minister Christine Elliot says the province is expanding its COVID-19 vaccination efforts as 78 per cent of adults have received one dose – and half are fully immunized.

Elliott says the province is not stopping there, because it wants to ensure even more Ontarians can benefit from a two-dose summer.

She says more family doctors will be involved in the vaccination effort and they will be given data on patients who have and haven’t been vaccinated to help with outreach.

From May 15 to June 12 there were more than 29,000 new infections reported. Over that time span, approximately 83 per cent of the cases were among people who were not vaccinated at all.

Only 1.2 per cent of the cases were people who were fully vaccinated.

The province also announced it is now expected to receive six additional shipments from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna over the next four weeks.
