Nylander scores OT winner, Maple Leafs snap losing skid against Blackhawks

By Lucas Casaletto

William Nylander scored on a breakaway in overtime as the Toronto Maple Leafs rallied past the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Toronto trailed 2-0 by the first intermission but captain John Tavares scored in the second and David Kampf in the third to set up Nylander’s heroics. Chicago is winless to start the season after seven games.

Starting goalie Jack Campbell stopped 25 shots as the Maple Leafs snapped a four-game losing skid with the victory.

Mitch Marner, who has been the subject of some criticism about his play of late, fired a game-high seven shots on net while registering an assist.

“We got to be comfortable winning games 2-1, 3-1, 1-0, whatever it is, until our offence gets going. There’s no shame in that,” said forward Wayne Simmonds. “We got a lot of firepower on this team. We know it will come around. We have to stick to the foundation of our game.”

The Maple Leafs return home to host the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.

The non-sellout crowd in the United Center was noticeably subdued in the day after revelations that team executives in 2010 failed to take allegations of sexual assault by then-assistant coach Brad Aldrich against a backup player to authorities.

The player, Kyle Beach, came forward in a television interview on Wednesday.
