Single-day COVID-19 cases surge past 600 in Ontario

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Ontario surged past 600 on Sunday as the weekly average reached its highest level in over three weeks.

Provincial officials confirmed 636 new infections – the highest single-day total since October 9. It’s the fourth day in the last five that the province has recorded a daily increase and it is almost double the number of new cases reported last Sunday (340).

Of the new cases, 388 are in individuals who are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown status while 248 are fully vaccinated.

The rolling seven-day average of new cases now sits at 468 – the seventh straight day it has gone up and the highest it’s been since October 14.

The province says 93 people are hospitalized as a result of COVID-19, while 126 patients are in the ICU with coronavirus. However, hospital numbers are generally underreported on weekends.

An additional two people have died due to COVID-19, bringing the provincial total to 9,898.

The province administered 12,754 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine on Saturday, including just over 4,000 first doses. Over 88 per cent of eligible Ontarians 12-plus have now received at least one dose of the vaccine while almost 85 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Health officials processed 27,146 tests in the last 24-hour period as the positivity rate climbed to 2 per cent for the first time since the beginning of October.
