Ontario reports highest single-day COVID-19 case count in more than 6 months

The province of Ontario is reporting its highest single-day total of new COVID-19 cases in more than six months.

Health officials reported 1,184 new infections on Sunday, the third consecutive day the case count has topped 1,000.

It’s the highest single-day total of new cases since May 28 when 1,273 were reported.

Of the new cases, 648 are in individuals who are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccine status while 536 are in fully vaccinated people.

The seven-day average of new cases is now up 926. A week ago, it was sitting at 760.

For the fifth straight day, Toronto is reporting an increase in new cases with 152 on Sunday. Simcoe-Muskoka District confirmed 96 new infections while York Region added 88 new cases and Windsor-Essex reported 86. Peel Region says it added 81 new cases.

There were no additional deaths reported on Sunday.

According to provincial data, 140 people are in hospital with COVID-19, however, hospitalization numbers are underreported on the weekend. The number of individuals in the ICU increased slightly, with 164. A week ago, it was 135. The province did not provide a breakdown of unvaccinated and vaccinated individuals currently in the ICU.

Patients who are on a ventilator due to the virus climbed to over 100 for the first time in two weeks on Sunday.

The province processed 31,735 tests in the past 24-hour period, with a positivity rate of 3.5 per cent.

Health officials say almost 63,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered on Saturday, including 32,473 first doses and more than 25,000 booster shots.
