Horgan, Houston tops among Canadian premiers, Kenney continues to flounder: poll

A year-end survey finds B.C. Premier John Horgan and Nova Scotia’s Tim Houston with the highest approval rating among Canadian provincial leaders.

The quarterly Maru Public Opinion poll conducted between November 26 and December 6 finds Horgan is the most popular Canadian premier with 60 per cent approval, up two percentage points from the last survey taken in September.

Houston, who became the first Conservative leader to win a majority government in Nova Scotia in over a decade back in August, is hot on the heels of Horgan with 59 per cent approval.

Quebec Premier Françoise Legault is third at 57 per cent, a drop of one percentage point since the last survey was taken.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is down one percentage point as well, to 41 per cent or roughly the same support he received at the ballot box in 2018 when he carried the Conservatives to a majority win.

At the opposite end, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney continues to flounder with just a 29 per cent approval rating — down two percentage points from September. Since June 2019, Kenney’s approval rating has fallen 26 percentage points.

Still, Kenney’s rating is not the worst. That honour belongs to newly elected Manitoba Premier Heather Stefansson, who garnered only 28 per cent support. Stefansson was chosen the new leader of the Manitoba PC party back in November, succeeding Brian Pallister. However, she begins her first term six percentage points lower than Pallister when his approval rating was last taken in September.

The survey was conducted using 5,293 randomly selected Canadian adults who are Maru Voice Canada online panelists and has a margin of error of +/- 1.4 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
