Canadian Blood Services issues urgent call for donations heading into 2022

The Canadian Blood Services has started a holiday campaign to try and get 38,000 donations from people across the country. Brandon Rowe speaks with someone for Canadian Blood Services to find out why these donations are important.

Canadian Blood Services is in immediate need of blood donations to ensure a healthy supply heading into the new year.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, the service is looking for people with all blood types — especially ‘O-negative’ blood as it is compatible with all other types.

Staff with the agency said several days of collections were lost due to statutory holidays, but the need for platelets and blood remains the same.

“There is a lot of uncertainty during a pandemic, but there are always patients in need of blood and blood products,” the statement said.

“With the exception of any temporary COVID-19 related suspensions of donor centre operations, we will remain open to ensure essential products and services are available for patients. We are calling on new and returning donors to book an appointment now heading into January.”

It also noted there are thousands of appointments available and donors were asked to cancel as early as possible if needed.

Canadian Blood Services donor sites are fully vaccinated workplaces with enhanced screening due to COVID-19.
