54-year-old Supt. Riyaz Hussein is facing impaired driving charges after crashing into the back of a truck on the 401. Police say he was found with an open alcohol container.

A veteran Toronto police officer in charge of the force’s disciplinary hearings office has been charged with impaired driving after a delivery truck was rear-ended on Highway 401 in Pickering on Thursday.

The OPP says the accused, Toronto police Supt. Riyaz Hussein, was driving eastbound on the 401 at around 7 p.m. when his vehicle crashed into the back of a truck.

Responding officers suspected the 54-year-old veteran officer was impaired and allege he was driving with an open alcohol container.

Hussein was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was later charged with:

    • Over 80 mgs Operation of a Motor Vehicle
    • Careless Driving
    • Having Care or Control of a Motor Vehicle with Open Liquor

Hussein is scheduled to appear in court on February 10 in Oshawa.

“Superintendent Hussein has 33 years of service and was assigned to the Disciplinary Hearings Office. He has been suspended with pay,” Toronto police said in a release.
