Suspect accused of stealing $8K guitar from Richmond Hill store by putting it in pants

York Regional Police say they’re looking for two male suspects after surveillance video appeared to capture one of the accused stealing an electric guitar by putting it down his pants.

According to a statement issued by the service Wednesday afternoon, the bizarre incident happened at a music store near Leslie Street and Elgin Mills Road East on Dec. 30.

Investigators released a 56-second surveillance video that appears to show the accused seated and holding a light-coloured electric guitar, identified as a Gibson Custom Shop 60th anniversary 1959 Les Paul Standard worth approximately $8,000, before putting it down the front of his pants.

Although part of the video is blurred, it appears others were in the store standing feet away from where the accused was seated.

After several seconds the suspect can be seen opening his jacket and covering the body of the guitar. The video goes on to show the accused picking up another guitar and examining it before the video abruptly cuts to still images of two men wanted as part of the investigation.

Police said the suspect in the store left and got into a vehicle being driven away by a second male suspect.

Officers said the man in the store was last seen wearing “extremely large, baggy” pants, a black coat and a Toronto Maple Leafs hat. The second man was described as wearing a black mask, a black hoodie and sunglasses.

Anyone with information was asked to call officers at 1-866-876-5423, ext.7241 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
