Ontario reports 58 more COVID-19 deaths Sunday as monthly death toll tops 1,200

Ontario is reporting 58 additional deaths related to COVID-19 on Sunday as the death toll for the month of January tops 1,200.

The province says three of deaths reported are from a data cleanup.

Health officials say there are 3,019 patients in hospital due to COVID-19, however that number is underreported as not all hospitals submit their data on the weekend.

There are 587 COVID patients in ICU with 358 of them currently on a ventilator.

Provincial officials did not release data on the COVID-19 or vaccination status of patients in hospital or in critical care.

Health officials confirmed 3,960 new cases of COVID-19, but that number is underreported due to changes in the province’s testing policy. Of those cases, 1,153 were partially or not fully vaccinated or had an unknown status while 2,807 individuals are fully vaccinated.

Locally, Toronto confirmed 721 new infections with Peel Region reporting 557 new cases and 234 in York Regions. Again, those figures are underreported due to testing restrictions.

A total of 23,638 tests were completed over the last 24-hour period with a positivity rate of 13.5 per cent. There are just over 6,100 tests waiting to be processed.

The province administered only 68,327 doses of COVID vaccines on Saturday – one of the lowest weekend totals reported. That included just over 21,500 second doses and 40,485 booster shots. Almost 92 per cent of Ontarians 12-plus have received at least one dose of the vaccine while 89 per cent are considered fully vaccinated.
