Canada eliminated from medal contention in Mixed Doubles Curling in Beijing

Canada has been eliminated from medal contention in Mixed Doubles Curling following a loss to Italy at the Beijing Olympics.

The Canadians fell 8-7 to undefeated Italy in an extra end, meaning they will not repeat as gold medalists in this event.

Canada held the hammer and had to draw to the button to secure the victory and a spot in the semifinals. However, Rachel Homan’s shot slid just a millimetre too deep and a measurement awarded Italy the steal of one for the win.

Homan and Morris finished with a 5-4 record and tied with Sweden in fourth place, but Sweden advanced due to their 6-2 victory over Canada earlier in the week.

Canada was the defending Olympic champion in mixed doubles, which made its debut in 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Morris, a three-time world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist, was paired with Homan, a three-time Canadian national champion and 2017 world champion after Curling Canada cancelled the mixed doubles curling trials back December due to a rise in athletes testing positive for the COVID-19 virus.
